STUDENT SHOWCASE: Andrew Merriman
Ceramicist
South Medford High School
I started in ceramics during my freshman year. This year, as a senior, my schedule opened up and I was able to take more electives. Ceramics 2 was the first choice for me. In ceramics 2 I began experimenting with the potter’s wheel and fell in love with it. I was able to finish my master’s project and have more freedom in the class. I am also a student aid in ceramics and this has allowed me to teach beginning students some of the things I have learned.
Ceramics is an art that has no limits. I am learning new things every day and working on mastering a technique. Any opportunity I get to work in the studio I take advantage of. My perfectionist personality has made getting a “perfect piece” very difficult. There are so many variables when making a piece and I love the challenges.
Ceramics is a hobby for me. I hope I will be able to continue to enjoy this hobby. South Medford is the last public school in the Rogue Valley that has a ceramics program. Hundreds of students are able to get their hands in clay. We are lucky to have Mr. Richmond as a teacher. He is excited to teach and is very knowledgeable about ceramics. He has taught me everything I know about ceramics.
