Hi everyone, I hope you all are enjoying your summers! Here at the station, our summer means a whole batch of new content, much of it dealing with the true final frontier: SPACE! Our space-themed programming not only looks at the magnificence of the entire universe, but it also celebrates some of the greatest human achievements in history. I hope you are all as interested and entertained as I plan on being.
In other news, our members recently received their first copies of the SOPTV SPOTLIGHT. I hope you enjoy the magazine, and I would love to hear your feedback. Please, don't hesitate to contact me at 541-200-2866 or at hlanier@soptv.org.
Until next month!

American Experience: Chasing the Moon |
---|
Three-part documentary premieres July 8-10 at 9 p.m. Encore airing Tuedays, July 16, 23 & 30 at 8 p.m. |
---|
Years in the making, CHASING THE MOON thoroughly reimagines the race to the moon for a new generation, upending much of the conventional mythology surrounding the effort. The series recasts the Space Age as a fascinating stew of scientific innovation and PR savvy, political calculation and media spectacle, visionary impulses and personal drama.
With no narration and using only archival footage — including a visual feast of previously lost or overlooked material culled from more than 90 different archives from around the world — the series features new interviews with a diverse cast of characters who played key roles in these historic events. Among those included are astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Frank Borman and Bill Anders; the renowned futurist Freeman Dyson; Sergei Khrushchev, the son of former Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, who played a prominent role in the Soviet space program as a rocket engineer; Poppy Northcutt, the 25-year-old “mathematics whiz” who gained worldwide attention as the first woman to serve in the all-male bastion of NASA’s Mission Control; and Ed Dwight, the Air Force pilot selected by the Kennedy administration to train as America’s first black astronaut. While other documentaries have largely painted a familiar narrative of goals set, obstacles overcome, disasters averted and missions accomplished, CHASING THE MOON tells a vastly more entertaining and surprising story. As the film reveals, the drive to land a man on the moon was fueled as much by politics as it was by technology and was a controversial undertaking during a volatile era. |

Grantchester Season 4 Premiere! |
---|
Premieres Sunday, July 14 at 9 p.m. |
---|
It’s 1956 in Grantchester, and the post-war rulebook is being torn up – it’s the birth of the teenager, the era of Elvis. There’s change at the vicarage, too.
There’s a new Vicar of Grantchester: firebrand Will Davenport. Idealistic and energetic, Will is a man of the people. He rides into the village on a motorbike, listens to rock ‘n roll and encourages the congregation to call him by his first name – all of which leaves Mrs. C. appalled.
Throughout all of this upheaval, one constant remains: there is injustice in this world, and whether it’s Sidney, Will, or even Leonard, Geordie knows that sometimes a vicar can be a detective’s best friend.
